“I quit the earth/I’m out of my mind/And the fruit of it all,” Welsh art-pop Dadaist Cate Le Bon sings on “Moderation,” an avant-garde pop song stacked with horns and deliquescing synths.
“Moderation/I can’t have it/I don’t want it/I wanna touch it.” That desire—and the building of soundscapes like free-jazz abstractions as a substitute for articulating that desire—is at the heart of Le Bon’s craft, a reversal of her early jangly guitar records in the late 2000s.
Now, on her stellar sixth full-length LP, Pompeii, Le Bon’s penchant for airy psychedelia and surrealist pop reaches new heights: It’s heard on the sad sweetness of electric saxophones on “Running Away” and the spacey sentimentality of “Remembering Me.” It’s heard everywhere.
